Even in the middle of the night, when everything should really be shut down, my mind sorts through complex issues in the philosophy of mathematics. I never really sleep. How could I sleep? There is so much to think about. The world is filled with innumerable abstract objects for which we have no criteria of identity -- no method by which to confirm that we are, indeed, identifying the same objects. I seem to speak of numbers and have genuine mathematical knowledge, but no adequate account of these data have been provided by philosophers.
Suggestion 1: Numbers are metaphorical abstractions.
Suggestion 2: Numbers are Platonic objects.
